Why your Malta business isn't showing on Google, and how to fix it
Not appearing on Google usually comes down to one of two problems: your website isn't indexed, or your Maps listing isn't set up properly. Here is how to work out which, and what to check first.

You search for your own business and nothing comes up. Or a competitor down the road appears on the map and you don't. It is one of the most frustrating problems an owner can have, and one of the most common.
The good news is that the cause is usually findable in an afternoon. The first step is working out which part of Google you are missing from, because the website and the map listing work differently.
- Website and Maps are separate. Your site appears in the ordinary results; your Google Business Profile appears on the map.
- For the website, check it can be crawled and indexed, using Google Search Console.
- For the map, check the profile is claimed, verified, eligible and in the right category.
- Being listed is not the same as ranking first. Distance, relevance and reputation all play a part.
First, which result is missing?
Search for your exact business name, then search for what you do and where, for example "physiotherapist Birkirkara".
| What you see | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| No website and no map listing for your name | The site may not be indexed and the profile may not exist or be verified |
| Map listing appears, website doesn't | A website indexing or technical problem |
| Website appears, no map listing | A Google Business Profile problem |
| You appear for your name but not for your service | You are listed, but other businesses rank ahead of you |
Each row has a different fix, so it is worth being precise before changing anything.

If your website is missing
Check whether Google knows about it
Type site:yourbusiness.mt into Google, using your own domain. If nothing comes back, Google has not indexed the site.
Set up Google Search Console
Search Console is free and tells you exactly what Google sees. Add your site, submit a sitemap, and use the URL Inspection tool on your homepage. It will tell you whether the page is indexed and, if not, why.
Look for the common blockers
- A "noindex" setting left on from when the site was being built
- A robots.txt file that blocks search engines
- A brand new site that simply hasn't been crawled yet
- Pages that only show their text after heavy scripts load
- A recent redesign that changed web addresses without redirects
That last one catches out many businesses. If you are planning a new site, our guide to redesigning without losing Google visibility explains how to avoid it.
If your map listing is missing
Check the profile exists and is yours
Search for your business on Google Maps. If a listing exists but nobody in the business can manage it, use the option to claim it. If there is none, create one at Google Business Profile.
Then check who has access. Profiles are often still controlled by a former employee or an old supplier.
Check you are eligible
Business Profiles are for businesses that meet customers in person: either at a location customers visit, or at the customer's address. Online-only businesses aren't eligible. Google's guidelines for representing your business explain the rules.
If you visit customers rather than receiving them, hide your address and set a service area such as specific localities, Malta or Gozo.
Check verification
An unverified profile won't show properly. Google decides which verification method to offer, and even after you complete it, a review can take several business days.
Check the basics
- Business name exactly as it appears on your signage, with no added keywords
- Primary category as specific as possible, for example "Barber shop" rather than "Beauty salon"
- Map pin in the right spot, which is worth double-checking in Maltese streets where numbering can be inconsistent
- No duplicate listings for the same business
Listed, but not near the top?
Google ranks local results on three broad things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well known and well reviewed you are).
You can't change your distance, but you can improve the other two:
- Fill in services, hours, photos and a plain description
- Invite every customer to leave a review, and reply to each one
- Make sure your website has a clear page for each main service
- Keep your name, phone and address identical everywhere online
A town name can be spelled several ways in Malta, such as Ħamrun or Hamrun. Pick one form and use it everywhere.
What to note down before asking for help
If you decide to get help, these details make the problem quicker to solve:
- Your website address and exact business name
- The searches you tried, and where you were when you tried them
- Screenshots of what you saw
- Whether anything changed recently, such as a new site, address or phone number
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take for a new website to appear on Google?
It can be a few days or a few weeks. Submitting a sitemap and requesting indexing in Search Console usually helps Google find it sooner, but there is no guaranteed timeframe.
Why does my competitor appear and I don't?
They may be closer to where the search was made, have a more relevant category, more reviews, or a more complete profile. Check the steps above before assuming something is broken.
Can I pay Google to appear on the map?
You can pay for ads, which are labelled as sponsored. The ordinary map listings can't be bought; they depend on relevance, distance and prominence.
